John Odumegwu scored the game’s only goal as Rivers United beat Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) 1-0 in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) on Saturday.

The big attacker rolled in the ball from two yards after 3SC failed to clear their lines in a crowded penalty area in the 21st minute.

It was the least United deserved overall in a game that saw 3SC carve out several opening to claim a share of the spoils, especially in the second half.

United thought they had taken an early lead after Odumegwu turned and shot smartly past 3SC goalkeeper Charles Tambe from 14 yards in the second minute.

The effort was however chalked off for offside but he did not despair and continued to push and probe before getting due reward 19 minutes later after the 3SC defence failed to clear their lines.

3SC should have levelled matters in the 35th minute when Ajani Ibrahim turned his marker inside out before seeing his powerfully-struck shot from point blank range beaten out by Femi Thomas.

In a second half of few clear-cut openings, Bernard Ovoke’s long range drive which was spectacularly pushed away for a corner was the closest the ‘Pride of
Rivers’ came to extending their lead.

Technical manager of Rivers United, Stanley Eguma said he was satisfied with the result but not the team’s performance.

“It is always important to get maximum points so I am happy with that but the performance could have been better,” he told supersport.com.

Rivers United now occupy 13th spot on the NPFL standings with 33 points from 25 matches while 3SC remain in the relegation zone – 18th place on the log – with 29 points from 26 games.
