NPFL referee Agboola suspended

Sarafa Agboola, the referee who superintended over the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) game between Gombe United and Rivers United on Sunday, April 2 has been suspended until the end of the season.

Agboola disallowed a goal scored by Rivers United’s Asamoah Godbless in the
84th minute of the game decided at the Pantami Stadium, Gombe.

Despite the pleas and protests of the Rivers United players on the day, referee Agboola stood his ground and chalked off the goal.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) referees committee endorsed by the head of refereeing unit of the NFF who also doubles as secretary of the referees committee of the NFF, Sani Zubairu on Wednesday reached a decision that Agboola of Osun State Referees Council "has to be in the cooler till the end of the season."

Zubairu added that the decision to suspend Agboola "was as a result of poor handling and sheer display of incompetence which affected the outcome of the match.

He further noted that "a concise approach was adopted by usage of the video clips and report of the assessment to find the referee wanting in the discharge of his duties and gross abuse of the laws of the game in the said match."

Meanwhile, the sanctioned referee has been recommended to the discplinary Committee for further action.
