Rivers United defeat Villarreal in pre-season game

The Pride of Rivers kicked off their fifth and final phase of pre-season in Madrid with a win over the Yellow Submarine courtesy of a Guy Kuemian's first half finish.
Rivers United continued their impressive buildup to the 2016/2017 Nigeria Professional Football League season with a 1-0 victory over Villarreal as they commence their pre-season in Madrid on Wednesday morning.

The 2015/2016 league runners-up showed a great fighting spirit to continue their pre-season winning streak and overcome the Spanish side despite struggling in the first 20 minutes of the game after committing three fouls.

A 24th minute header by Guy Kuemian corner kick was all that Stanley Eguma's men needed to edge their host at the mini stadium of the Estadio El Madrigal.

Rivers United held on to the lead but Guy Kuemian struggled to continue the game after going down unchallenged and was later replaced by Wike Elvis while Bernard Ovoke and Markson Ojobo were substituted for Asamoah Godbless and Ayobami Asekunowo.

The NPFL Super 4 champions will be playing a La Liga club, Levante Union Deportiva II and Club Deportivo Alcoyano as they continue preparation for the 2017 Caf Champions league and also have a guided tour to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu before returning back to Nigeria on December 22.
