Plateau United began the matchday with a five-point lead but a 1-0 defeat at El-Kanemi meant the league leaders suffered their seventh loss of the campaign.
At the Agege Stadium in Lagos, MFM FC took a two-goal lead against ABS after 66 minutes through goals from Austine Ogunye from the spot and Sikiru Olatunbosun in open play. Wasiu Alalade's goal with two minutes to time was too
little, too late.
MFM now have 46 points from 27 matches played.
El-Kanemi needed a last-gasp strike from Sunday Anthony in fifth minute of stoppage time in the second half to turn back a gritty Plateau United. The Borno Army move into fourth place with 43 points.
Akwa United climbed into third place after their first win over Enyimba since September 2014 when they won 1-0. The Promise Keepers re-enacted the same feat with a 1-0 win over Enyimba. Musa Newman's goal in the 15th minute off Ubong Friday's assist was enough to seal the win.
Ibrahim Ajani and Bode Daniel scored first-half goals for 3SC as they cruised to a 2-0 win over Wikki Tourists to put life into their bid for survival. The Ibadan club remain in the bottom-four with 32 points.
Cup holders FC Ifeanyiubah made light work of Katsina United by running out 2-0 winners. Godwin Obaje netted his 10th goal of the campaign while Chijioke Alaekwe, who was impressive on his return to first team football, got the other goal.
NPFL champions Enugu Rangers suffered a 3-1 defeat at Lobi Stars after Mba Ezekiel, Kingsley Eduwo and Anthony Okpotu scored to give the home team a 3-0 goal cushion. Daniel Etor's strike in added time of second half for Rangers was barely adequate for late charge of any kind.
Peter Momoh's goal just a minute before the hour was enough to secure a 1-0 win for Niger Tornadoes against bottom-placed Remo Stars at the Confluece Stadium in Lokoja. The result means Tornadoes completed the double on the Sky Blue Stars.
Abiodun Joseph scored the winner for Sunshine Stars in their 1-0 success over Abia Warriors. Joseph also netted in the 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture.
The surprise result of the matchday happened at the Lafia City Stadium. Gombe United held Nasarawa United to a 1-1 draw after Sani Abbani's second-half strike cancelled Antonin Oussou's first-half goal.
