Weli pleased to inspire Rivers Utd

Rivers United midfielder, Christian Weli has spoken about his happiness after he scored a decisive goal in the club’s 2-0 victory over ABS FC in a rescheduled Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) game on Thursday.
Weli produced a composed finish in the 38th minute to put United in front at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium and it acted as the catalyst for the second as the ‘Pride of Rivers’ secured crucial points.
The feat was even more impressive as the midfielder had sustained a serious
injury moments earlier and was substituted seconds after he scored due to the precarious nature of the situation.
The midfielder has now scored twice for the club this season following an earlier strike against MFM FC in Lagos on March 23 but is not resting on his laurels as he looks to inspire a Rivers United renaissance.
“I felt so bad after sustaining the injury but I summoned up courage and continued playing,” Weli told supersport.com.
“Before the game, I knew I was going to score so even after I sustained the injury, I told the doctors that I would play on.
“I know I will score more goals this season,” he said.
United’s form before Thursday’s win had been anything but impressive with three consecutive defeats recorded against MFM FC, Enyimba and Gombe United.
Weli said the players decided to force the issue and amass maximum points against the newly-promoted ABS FC.
He also took the time to assess his side’s chances against Abia Warriors in their next NPFL game in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
“We told ourselves that we will play with our hearts; we did that and we won.
“Now, we have a very important game against Abia Warriors on Sunday.
“We have to do the same thing too. It will not be an easy game but we will do our best to win,” he said.
Rivers United have amassed 18 points from 15 matches in the NPFL this season and currently sit in 17th place on the log.
