Asamoah, Weli put ABS to the sword

Christian Weli and Godbless Asamoah scored a goal each as Rivers United recorded a nervy 2-0 win over ABS FC in a rescheduled Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) game in Port Harcourt on Thursday.
United started the game in nervy fashion and should have been behind just after the half hour.
Eugene Ossy side stepped his marker in the United box before firing a powerful shot against the cross bar in the 34th minute with
the hosts’ goalkeeper, Abiodun Akande, beaten.
That miss was to come back to haunt the visitors as United took the lead barely five minutes later.
Good work by Guy Kuemian on the left freed midfielder Weli who calmly picked his spot and shot past the ABS goalkeeper, Suleiman Dogo.
It was a goal scored against the run of play as ABS had been the more assured-looking side before that period.
The goal however put the spring in the steps of the United players who carved several more opportunities before the half came to a close.
ABS dominated for large stretches in the second half but profligacy was their biggest undoing.
United put the game to bed seven minutes from the end after Asamoah swept home following exceptional work by Ifeanyi Nweke on the right.
The win, United’s first in three NPFL matches, saw them move up two places on the log.
Rivers United are now in 17th place on the log with 18 points from 15 matches while ABS remain in 13th place with 22 points from 17 matches.
