Philippe Coutinho left out of Liverpool's Champions League play-off first-leg squad
Philippe Coutinho has been
left out of Liverpool's squad for the first leg of their Champions
League play-off tie against Hoffenheim.
However, the Brazil playmaker would still be eligible to play
in the Champions League for another club this season even if he
appeared in the second legagainst the Bundeliga side at Anfield.
UEFA regulations state that "a player may not play in a UEFA club competition for more than one club in the course of the same season", but those rules do not apply to the qualifying stages.
But they do so with Coutinho's future still a point of scrutiny, as Liverpool turned down Barcelona's second offer of £90.4m for the Brazilian last week, prompting the 25-year-old to send in a transfer request by email.
Coutinho missed Liverpool's Premier League opener at Watford with a back injury.
Daniel Sturridge, who missed the 3-3 draw at Vicarage Road after suffering a thigh injury in pre-season, is also not in Liverpool's 22-man travelling squad due to his latest setback.
He scored in the return leg as the Dutch side went out on away goals after it finished 3-3 on aggregate.
"Exceptionally, however, a player who has been fielded in the first, second, third qualifying round or the play-offs of the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League is entitled to play in the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League for another club as from the group stage.
"Moreover, as from the start of the round of 16, a player can be registered in accordance with Paragraph 44.01 to Paragraph 44.04.
"A substitute player who has not been fielded is entitled to play for another club competing in the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League in the course of the same season, provided that he is registered with the UEFA administration in accordance with the present regulations."
