Rivers Angels head coach, Edwin Okon has said his
side have come to stay at the top-flight summit after a convincing win
against neighbours, Abia Angels.
The Jewel of Rivers dismissed the Umuahia landladies 4-1 in Thursday’s Nigeria Women Premier League (NWPL) matchday 12 clash at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt.
Okon said his attention has shifted to a successful completion of the season games at top-flights, Sunshine Queens next Wednesday in Akure.
“I’m very happy going back to the top though at group stage, we will work very hard to
end the campaign as leaders.
“The victory against Abia Angels is a huge boost for us going ahead to our final match at Sunshine Queens.
“We want to keep the top spot that means we must earn the whole three points at stake in Akure against Sunshine Queens.
“Nothing short of outright win will be acceptable to us at Sunshine Queens, we just pray for even playing field in the encounter.
“We have secured the Super Four spot we are not celebrating it yet but to focus on finishing the game at Sunshine Queens.
“After the clash we will then shift our attention to the Super Four campaign and how to retain the league title.
“We are champions and will fight hard to remain as champions at the end of the campaign.
“I think the players have justified their shirts the only low in our campaign was the home draw against Ibom Angels.
“The players acknowledged thereafter that they actually took the visitors for granted, I think they performed creditably well in the regular season,” said the former Super Falcons coach to supersport.com.
The Garden City are at the summit of the seven-team NWPL Group A log on 22 points same as closest challengers, Bayelsa Queens but on superior goals.
