Gilles Simon survived a scare against wildcard Max Marterer to progress through the first round of the German Open in Hamburg.

Frenchman Simon, who is currently ranked at 39 in the world, edged past the German in three sets 6-2 4-6 6-4 to make it to the last 16 of the clay-court tournament.

While Simon's compatriot Benoit Paire, who made the
fourth round at Wimbledon earlier this month before being beaten by Andy Murray, saw off Dmitry Tursunov 6-3 6-2.
