Gilles Simon survived a scare against wildcard Max Marterer to progress through the first round of the German Open in Hamburg.
Frenchman Simon, who is currently ranked at 39 in the world,
edged past the German in three sets 6-2 4-6 6-4 to make it to the last
16 of the clay-court tournament.
While Simon's compatriot BenoitPaire, who made the fourth round at Wimbledon earlier this month before being beaten by Andy Murray, saw off DmitryTursunov 6-3 6-2.

Elsewhere, German Florian Mayer made it through with a straight-sets 7-5 6-2 win over Marco Cecchinato, while Daniel Altmaier beat HoracioZeballos 7-6 6-4.
There was more success for the host nation as qualifier Cedrik-Marcel Stebe beat DamirDzumhur 6-3 6-4, and sixth-seed Diego Schwartzman eased past AndreasHaider-Maurer 6-2 6-3.
