Rohr wants redesigned kits for his birds

As a result of the recent extension of Nike’s deal with the Nigeria Football Federation, there are changes to the new kits designed for the team for the 2018 Fifa World Cup that are being requested.

After a bright start to the World Cup qualifiers, NFF chieftains met with Nike officials in London last week to discuss and extension of the deal and to present the proposed new kit designed for the team.

This is a first considering what has been done before by Nike and Adidas who have been the kit suppliers for the national teams in the last ten years.

Nigeria’s debut at USA ‘94 saw the team play with a new Adidas design affectionately called the "Akwete" kit by the fans.Though aesthetically appealing, some felt it
didn't depict Nigeria’s conservative plain green and white, and that the introduction of a third colour, (red) even though just for numbers, seemed out of place. Others swore it was the best ever

Over the decades Nigeria has worn an assortment of kits.....some good and some not so good.
Nike also provided an ‘Adidas’ modification for the 1995 Confederations Cup which also had black motifs entwined with black and green colors with striped socks to go with it.

Another prime example will be the kits the Super Eagles wore at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Adidas came up with a light green concept which was a clear departure from the dark green and white combination associated with the Eagles and seemed to mimic the Nike kit they wore at the 2002 World Cup.

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr, who was with NFF chieftains in London also gave his input as regards the texture and color tints to be used for the new kit.

Rohr was of the opinion that the fabric to be used be lighter because of the hot and humid conditions in Africa. A lighter ventilated fabric will allow the players feel cooler and comfortable under the typical African weather.

He also touched on the color used and suggested certain areas of the kit be made lighter for visibility reasons when the players are on the pitch.

The last design done by Nike was used in the 2018 Fifa World Cup qualifier against Algeria in Uyo. Nike produced the same kit used by the Olympic team to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio with a little modification.

The dark green shirt had a white half collar which ran from the back with a lighter shade of green around the back where numbers are usually printed.

The all green shorts remained the same while the green socks had a vector patching of white to complement the rest of the kit.
