NURTW member sentenced to 25 years for murder of medical student


JUSTICE Munta Abimbola, the Chief Judge of Oyo State on Thursday sentenced to 25 years in prison, a middle aged man, Akinwumi Adisa, a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, for being culpable of murder and conspiracy to murder.

Adisa and three others; Olumide Oladeji, Sadiq Adedeji and Tajudeen Arowotosuna, were arraigned by the state in the year 2012 over allegations of murder and conspiracy to murder.
The case was filed before the state high court on May 8, 2012 and the men were arraigned on a two count charge of conspiracy to murder and the murder of a 500 level medical student of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, identified as Anwal Bala Shanono.
But the court did not find any guilt on the part of the other three defendants and consequently discharged and acquitted them.

While delivering judgment, Justice Abimbola stated that, “I hereby sentence Akinwumi Adisa to 25 years imprisonment with hard labour. I do not have substantial reason to convict the second, third and fourth convicts, they are discharged and acquitted.

The charge read, “That on the 4th day of June, 2011, Akinwumi Adisa, Olumide Oladeji, Sadiq Adedeji and Tajudeen Arowotosuna and others now at large at about 21:30 (9.30pm) at the Total Filling station, Iwo Road Garage, Ibadan within the Ibadan judicial Division, did conspire together to murder one Anwal Bala Shanowo, a 500 level final year medical of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The second count stated that, “That you Akinwumi Adisa, Olumide Oladeji, Sadiq Adedeji, Tajudeen Arowotosuna and others now at large on 4th June, 2011 at about 9.30pm at Total Filling station, Iwo road, Ibadan within the Ibadan Judicial Division murdered one Anwal Bala Shanono, a 500 level final year student of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
