Customs nab suspected human trafficker with 4 children in Seme

• Arrest drug trafficker with 14 wraps of hemp

THE Seme Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has apprehended a suspected human trafficker along the Ashipa – Gbethromey axis in Seme area of Lagos State. The suspected human trafficker, Mr Porsu David, was nabbed with four children while driving a vehicle
with registration number AGL 538 BB. The Customs also said a suspected drug trafficker, Mr Hassan Yusuf, carrying substance suspected to be Indian hemp was also arrested.

According to a statement signed over the weekend by the command’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr Selechang Taupyen, the suspected drug trafficker was intercepted by the patrol officers on November 10, 2016, while the suspected human trafficker was arrested at Ashipa area on November 17, 2016.

The statement explained that while Mr David had in his possession four children who he could not declare their identity, Yusuf was arrested in possession of 14 wraps of substance suspected to be Indian hemp.

The statement also added thatYusuf had been handed over to the officials of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) while David and the four children  has been handed over to the Comptroller, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Seme on November 18, 2016.

The command’s spokesman noted that the Acting Customs Area Controller (CAC) of the Seme Command, Deputy Comptroller Ardo Mulima, while handing over the suspects to the relevant agencies saddled with the responsibility of investigating the suspected drug and human trafficker, disclosed that the gesture was strictly in line with inter-agency cooperation that exists at the international land border.

He quoted the Acting CAC as saying that as the lead agency at the border, the Seme Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service would continue to collaborate with the relevant agencies for effective and efficient border management.

He further quoted Mulima as saying that as an agency that works strictly in line with the ethics of securing, coordinating and managing the border in line with the global best practices, the service also expects other relevant agencies to reciprocate the gesture by giving classified and credible information about smugglers and other unpatriotic elements involved in trans-border vices to the Customs.

“The Nigeria Customs Service will not compromise to act promptly against any offender at the border even when the offence committed does not fall directly under the purview of the service,” Mulima was quoted.
