Jermall Charlo defends WBC belt

Jermall Charlo from Richmond, Texas makes the first defence of his WBC junior middleweight belt when he meets Charles Hatley of Dallas Texas at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Saturday night.

Charlo (28-0; 13) won the vacant title on 21 May last year when he knocked out John Jackson in the eighth round, and Hatley’s last fight was in November 2015 when he stopped Australian Anthony Mundine in the eleventh round.

The 26-year-old Charlo, who made his pro debut in 2007, only has a 46% knockout ration but has scored victories over quality fighters like Charles Bellamy, Mario Alberto Lozano, Joachim Alcine and Vanes Martirosyn before winning the vacant belt.

Hatley, 31, who has a record of 26-1-1; 18 with a knockout ration of 68%, has been fighting as a pro for nine years, with his only loss coming against Lanardo Tyner in August 2012 when he stopped Hatley in the first round.

Hatley has been inactive for 17 months, but
he could stretch the slick boxing Charlo over 12 rounds.
The other champions are WBA, Erislandy Lara (Cuba), IBF, Jarett Hurd (USA) and WBO, Saul Alvarez (Mexico).

TAPALES DEFENDS AGAINST OMORI
 
On Sunday Filipino Marlon Tapales defends his WBO bantamweight belt against fellow southpaw Shohei Omori of Japan at the Edion Arena in Osaka, Japan in a return match.

In December 2015 Tapales (29-2; 12) stopped the previously unbeaten Omori (18-1; 13) in the second round and seven months later he won the WBO belt with an eleventh round stoppage win over Thailand’s Pungluang Sor Singyu (aka Panyar Utkok).

Since his loss to Tapales the 24-year-old Omari has scored three wins, all inside the distance.
The other champions are WBC, Shinsuke Yamahaka (Japan), IBF, Lee Haskins (GB) and WBA, Zhanat Zhaiyanov (Kazakhstan).

On the same card three-weight world champion Kazuto Ioka (21-1; 13) defends his WBA flyweight belt against Thailand’s Noknoi CP Freshmart (62-4; 38), who has remained unbeaten for 12 years. Ioka will be making the fifth defence of his belt.

The other champions are WBC, Juan Hernandez (Mexico), WBO, Zou Shiming (China), and the IBF title is vacant.
