Son remanded for alleged death threat on parents
Alexander Okere, Benin
A 30-year-old man, Dickson Uwadinusu,
has been remanded in custody by an Egor Magistrates’ Court, Benin, Edo
State, for allegedly threatening to kill his parents.
The presiding magistrate, Mrs. E. Edokpayi, gave the order during Dickson’s arraignment on Thursday.
The magistrate added that the remand was until the determination of the defendant’s bail application.
However, the accused told his
girlfriend, who was present in court, that he was “happy” to go to
prison, adding that he would see her on the adjourned date.
“I am happy that I am going to the prison and will come back for you on the adjourned date,” he said.
The prosecutor, Violet Soyemi, had
earlier told the court that the offence was allegedly committed on
November 4, 2016, on Agbanbe Street, in Evbotubo Quarters, Benin.
Soyemi explained that the accused had on
the date locked his father, Goddy Uwadinusu, and his mother, Mrs.
Elizabeth Uwadinusu, out of their matrimonial home and allegedly
threatened to stab them with a knife and bottle if they attempted to
enter the house.
She said, “The accused assaulted his
father by pointing a knife and a bottle at him and threatening to stab
him with the objects.”
The accused pleaded not guilty to the
offence, which was said to be punishable under sections 86(1) and 351 of
the Criminal Code.
The counsel for the defendants subsequently urged the court to grant him bail in liberal terms.
But the prosecutor objected to his bail application, adding that he might continue threatening his parents if granted bail.
The presiding magistrate adjourned the case till November 29, 2016, for hearing.
